That’s not possible on the Vita, tragically, but the six levels as they are are plenty for me right now, especially since I’m still not quite as good as I want to be at them. You could actually pop a CD into your PlayStation and have Vibri navigate procedurally-generated levels based on the songs you played, sending the replayability of Vib-Ribbon through the roof. The audio does feel very compressed, sometimes even painfully so, through my Vita speakers, especially in the opening track “Polaroid” when the crashing symbols kick off, but that’s the only real issue with Vib-Ribbon – well, that, and it’s length, but that wasn’t an issue on the original console release. For only £3.99 on the PS Store, too, you could’ve released Vib-Ribbon on Steam this year and it would’ve felt right at home. In fact, everything about Vib-Ribbon feels like a modern indie release: its unique, minimalistic art style, simple concepts that develop into evermore challenging gameplay, and unconventional soundtrack (provided here by the Japanese rock band Laugh and Peace). These are the rhythm games that laid the groundwork for Guitar Hero and the like a decade later, and while we’re certainly looking at the humble beginnings with something Vib-Ribbon, this game in particular still feels every bit as fresh as the latest releases, despite now being over 20 years old. With all of this in mind, you might not be surprised to learn that Vib-Ribbon is a Japanese rhythm game, developed by NanaOn-Sha – the brains behind PaRappa the Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy. But, get it right, and Vibri blossoms into a heroic, confident little figure with her own cape and halo.Īs you get further into the game, though, these hurdles start to blend together to create ever-more complex combinations of button inputs, and while you’re still only operating with just the four buttons I mentioned earlier, you’re now scrabbling around to try and work out the combination as they appear on the horizon before you trip your poor friend up and ruin her fun. When you do make a mistake, the screen starts to wobble and contort, Vibri squeals in pain, and begins a peculiar devolution from a care-free rabbit to a frog and eventually to a worm with a block of some kind on its head… I think. As these blocks, pits, loop-the-loops and jagged spikes come towards her, you press L, down, R, or X respectively at the right time to clear them without taking damage. You play as Vibri, the white scribble-rabbit I mentioned earlier, who loves music but just needs a little help keeping time and clearing the hurdles placed on the thin white line she dances along.

In fact, if you watch any gameplay footage of Vib-Ribbon on YouTube and mute the sound, it would probably look dreadful – a mobile game that you’d get for free on the App Store that serves no purpose greater than keeping you occupied in a couple of mindless moments of boredom. I recently picked up Vib-Ribbon on the PS Store for my Vita after years of looking wistfully at eBay listings, but not being up to stomach the £50+ price tag for what I already knew was a short, six-stage rhythm game about a scribbly rabbit stepping, climbing, and rolling her way over four hurdles for two and a half minutes each.Īnd when I put it like that, it sounds like it should be awful. Vib-Ribbon might now be one of my favourite video games, but I have absolutely no idea why.
